Splitting fairly

“I’ve risked more, navigating us through treacherous waters,” the first claimed, his voice laced with entitlement. “60% is hardly enough for my efforts.”

Laughing bitterly, the second retorted, “And who deciphered the maps, huh? Who solved the riddles that led us here? My share deserves to be 60%.”

Back and forth they went.

“I braved the storms!”

“Well, I negotiated with pirates!”

Finally, the second, with a spark of madness in their eye, declared, “If your greed insists on more, then neither of us shall have it.”

With a swift, deliberate kick, the chest went careening over the edge as the two stood motionless, staring into the dark where their fortune had vanished.
